Covid-19 Update

While Schools are Closed, we are OPEN!

How will my child choose what instrument is best for them if we have to stay 6' apart and we can't share mouthpieces?! Don't Worry! We have the solution!

Welcome to Music! Mouthpiece testing for beginning band and Instrument fitting for beginning strings!

What are our goals for today?

Your student will be trying out every instrument available for beginning band or strings class. We have two goals:

  1. To see which instruments your student likes - the sound, the feel and the way the tone is produced;

  2. To see which instruments your student is naturally gifted with, and will succeed at playing more easily. There are some physical characteristics which may make one instrument easier for a child to succeed with than others. And we want to help every student succeed!

Why do students have to try every instrument?

Your music teachers want your student to try everything because you never know if you like something until you try it! We have had many, many students come into testing “sure” they wanted to play one instrument, and leave - very happily - playing something totally different. This is a great opportunity to try them all out, one right after the other!

Why can’t students just pick the instrument they want?

Music class is a lot like a sports team - we are all working together for one goal. The instrument sections need to be balanced, or we’ll sound very strange. Imagine a football team with 10 quarterbacks and no defensive line - that’s how we’d perform if we had all tubas and no clarinets, or all violins and no cellos. Your teacher will help you make the final decision about what to play.

When should we get an instrument?

Most music teachers would prefer to touch base with you before you get your instrument. Once you have your teacher’s go ahead, you are welcome to come back any time for your instrument. However we ask that you not open your case until your first lesson - whether that’s our Start Right! Camp, private lessons, or the first day of school. That way, you can be sure your instrument won’t be damaged and you’ll get a great start playing. Here’s a little tip: Your care kit has a coupon for one free lesson here at Musical Innovations, so feel free to take advantage of that!

Please come by and let us help so that your student doesn’t miss a beat!

Be assured that we have the sanitizing solutions, the know-how, and the proper equipment for SAFE, EASY, and EFFECTIVE Mouthpiece Testing and Instrument Fitting. COVID-19 and School Music - Letter to Parents, Colleagues, and Community Leaders

Thank you for your diligent and careful work in finishing out this past school year, for providing our students with the opportunity to continue learning, albeit amidst difficult circumstances. With the safety of students and staff as a primary consideration, you have had to make – and will continue to make - tough decisions affecting every aspect of education. Making education as safe as possible for students, while preventing the spread of Covid-19, is a challenge for us all, and requires re-evaluating nearly every aspect of education.

Recent studies conducted by the Vienna Philharmonic and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra have addressed the issue of safety in playing wind instruments, for both conductor and player. In both studies, results showed that playing a wind instrument does not, in fact, present additional risk to those around the performer. As a musician blows air into the instrument, the instrument creates resistance to produce a musical tone. This resistance slows the air stream, and captures the aerosols in the instrument, rather than spreading them around in the air as formerly hypothesized. Thus, music educators and schools can continue to offer students a quality music education, including performing ensembles, while still playing a proactive role in preventing the spread of Covid-19.
